Report CoverFuture Directions for the National Science Foundation's Arctic Natural Sciences Program (1998)

Within the Office of Polar Programs, the Arctic Natural Sciences Program (ANS) is responsible for funding research in a broad range of disciplines, including space sciences, atmospheric sciences, biology, geology, glaciology, oceanography, and other natural science disciplines. The scope of the program presents special management challenges, and this study -- done at the request of the Arctic Sciences Section -- offers advice to guide the program's evolution. The report reviews the ANS program goals, structure, management strategy, and operation to date. It then addresses the types of studies suitable for ANS funding and how the program might be best structured to support the broad multidisciplinary nature of its mission. It comments on the importance of international and interagency links, and on the vital issue of providing logistics support for research in the Arctic. The study committee was chaired by Dr. John T. Andrews, University of Colorado, Boulder.
