Who Should Attend

The workshop will be of interest to those interested or involved in the oversight of stem cell research and the clinical applications of stem cell research.

Participants will receive a copy of the 2008 Amendments to the National Academies' Guidelines for Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research.

For those not able to attend, we will make speaker presentations and possibly audio files available on this website after the meeting.



Agenda

The symposium will begin at approximately 8:30 a.m. EST on Thursday, November 20, 2008, and conclude at approximately 5:30 p.m. The agenda will include several major sessions including the follow topics:

  • Regulatory issues associated with stem cell therapeutics (D. Hursh, D. Weber)
  • Case study on the treatment of heart disease (K. Chien, R. Lee, C. Mummery)
  • Case study on the treatment of Parkinson's Disease (L. Goldstein, O. Lindvall, L. Studer)
  • Panel discussion on cross-cutting issues related to stem cell therapeutics (S. Solomon, I. Hyun, J. Lebkowski, A. Rick, J. Sugarman)
  • Opportunity for public comment and discussion

The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) building is located along the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The main entrance to the building is at 2100 C Street, NW. Please note that C Street is closed to automobile traffic between 21st and 23rd Streets (NAS is located across the street from the U.S. Department of State).

Participants are encouraged to use public transportation or taxis as parking is extremely limited near the NAS building. The building is 8 blocks from the Foggy Bottom Metrorail station on the Blue and Orange Lines of Washington's subway system.




Registration

Advance registration has now closed. Walk-ins are welcome.

Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements and expenses. A list of convenient hotels you may wish to consider has been provided as a courtesy below.




Transportation

The Washington, D.C., area is served by three major airports. You may wish to check all area airports for fares. Washington National Airport is located closest to the meeting location and downtown Washington and may be accessed by Metrorail subway. Amtrak service is available to Washington's Union Station.




Hotel Accommodations

Workshop participants may wish to consider the following hotels, which are located close to the symposium location (area map). Although no official rooming block or special rate has been established, each of these hotels is commonly used by committee members and visitors to the National Academies. We encourage you to make reservations as soon as possible.


Additional hotel listings may be found from the Washington, DC Convention and Tourism Corporation. The meeting location is in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington, D.C., and close to Georgetown.

The Rossyln neighborhood of Arlington, VA, is also quite close to the NAS building, located just across the Potomac River. Therefore, you may also wish to consult hotel listings from the Arlington Convention and Visitors Service.
